how to test UNIDENTIFIED weapons for certain mods, without using an ID kit
this is something i heard of recently, and it really bothered me that no one has come forth and outright explained how it is done. bunch of SCAMMERS IMHO.
edit; too many ppl thinking this knowledge will just make things worse.

there's not much to do with this knowledge since mods these days are very cheap.
Besides from that who buys unid stuff anymore? It seems people want the item they want right there before bothering to gamble on it.

I think people needed this. People will argue it will "drop economy" but that just means they can't sell the regular mods themselves, so they lend it to a chance and a high price. Educating the masses is always good, to keep them up with current trends in the market so they don't get drowned out or scammed over.
Cool beans, my fellow teacher.

Collector's for me, thanks. You can all keep your already figured-out un-id'd weapons!

I never bought an unidentified item either. Always felt it was a scam from the beginning. Glad to read how to test them though, but, I've always identified what I find anyway.

Why? Because people will realize that they are being cheated? Some of these farmers use these methods to sell unid golds and purples for more than they are worth. Most players don't have more than 10k on their accounts, so paying 5k for an unid item that is only worth 800 gold is a huge blow to their pocketbook. Its very unfair IMO.

^^^^^^^^^agreed
thats why i posted this, its a tactic used by the savvy to get rich, and get richer.
it is a main tactic used by gold farmers to sell on ebay.
this knowledge does not harm the casual honest player.
it only hurts scammers that their gig is up.
im not crying over the death of this "sector of the economy", based entirely on scamming IMHO

The masses doesn't read guild wars guru, especially not this one thread out of hundereds. If anything you have probably helped people that sell unid'ed stuff more than you have than hurt them. Although I'm guessing the majority of people who sell unided weapons already do this.
Keep in mind you can test for every single prefix, suffix, and innate modifiers. Although for most you will probably only get the value to within a few % of accurate, you can find the type after a long enough search. It would be pretty hard to narrow down the exact type sometimes - quick recovery would be tough and annoying, so would +armor vs specific damage, staff wrappings with +1 attribute etc; but it could be done.

buying unid items use to be a reputable "sector of the economy" before the days of faction points. Nowadays people just buy unid weapons because its risky and that chance to get that uber 15>50 chaos axe is enough for them to gamble all their gold. Good idea to tell these sort of ppl that gamble that 9 out of 10 times they will get ripped off.

Hmmm.... I'm imagining a conversation like this now:
Seller: WTS Gold Un-ID'd Horn Bow, it has +30 Health Mod and +15%^50!
Buyer: May I test that bow before I buy it?
Seller: What? So you can just run with it?
Buyer: Then how am I supposed to know what it has? Take your word for it while you take my money?
Obviously, the conversation declines at this point. Personally, if I can't read what it does, I don't buy. Forget it.

I've already started broadcasting ingame that it's a scam so word will get around and I play quite a lot so I can hit all the prime times. I wouldn't say just because it's posted here hardly anyone will know about it.

I am a seller of Un'id weapons. I can honestly say that even though I know how to id them I never waste the time unless it is something I want like a Chaos Axe or Storm Bow. Then I don't bother testing it I just ID it. I am sure that there are scammers out there but I am not one of them and even at 1k - 3k per un'id weapon I am still making out better than merching them.
I look at it like the lottery if your buying the Un'Id weapon. If you buy from me you might take home a 15^50 with good mods or you might get a +fire magic -1 shield. One is very lucky and the other is very unlucky (unless your current shield sucks ). Usually you end up with a max weapon that has ok stats and less than perfect mods which means you loose try again.
Doing this offers the casual player that does not farm the chance to either strike it rich or have that perfect weapon they have always wanted.
Also unless it is a Rare (Storm Bow, Chaos Axe, Eternal Shield, etc..) never pay more than 5k for an un'id weapon. Most people sell them around 3K.
I would like to mention that as long as your name is not Apple I will probably buy an un'id weapon from you. I like to play the lottery as much as run it. I have actually won a Max 15^50 Storm Bow this way.
